Feedback

Growth and Learning

We see feedback as a crucial part of growth and learning.

“Mastery in anything requires feedback” - Brené Brown

Giving and receiving feedback, whether it is critical or praise, can be a challenge at first. It brings up many uneasy feelings, and we might feel nervous about giving it if someone takes it personally. We might be feeling vulnerable in asking for feedback because it might knock our confidence or cause us to question our thought process. None of this is comfortable, but it is helpful.

When we get feedback from another person who has a different perspective of a situation, we gain insight into what might be a blind spot for us. We all have sides of our thinking or personality that we can’t see or don’t often look at. Feedback can be massively helpful in identifying and leaning into these growth areas.

Tips on Giving and Receiving Feedback

We will cover feedback in more depth on Bootcamp, but to get some practice during foundations, here are some tips:

When delivering feedback:

  1. Make it Actionable, Specific and Kind (ASK).
  2. When possible, give feedback face to face. If it’s not possible to provide feedback face to face, steer clear of anonymous feedback. Holding accountability for your feedback improves its quality due to the increased need for empathy.
  3. Check your state of mind/feelings before giving feedback. Only deliver critical feedback with the goal of growth for the other person in mind.

When receiving feedback:

  1. Sit with it for a while and notice your reactions. Try not to respond right away.
  2. Take on only what is actionable and valuable to you. Not all feedback is useful.
  3. Try not to deflect praise. Use it as an opportunity to build confidence in your ability.

Continuous Improvement

At Dev Academy, we strive for continuous improvement and understand our need to evolve our practices, curriculum and content. The Foundations curriculum you are experiencing has grown from the feedback of hundreds of students who have come before you.

To ensure we continue to improve, we ask for your valuable feedback.

We ask you to complete this form at the end of each Sprint, so we can do more of what is valuable to you (as a student) and do less of what isn’t.

From the Dev Academy Team, Thank you!
